Italy refuses to let up as Turkey continues offensive

The Turkish economic and military offensive has prompted Italy to take action in order to keep its position in its former colony. The first meeting of the Italian- Libyan economic committee CECIL will be held on 30 November. Italy hopes to outdo Turkey via its bilateral agreements with the Libyan government. These include the relaunch of road infrastructure projects, the development of oil fields via ENI and the rebuild of the Tripoli airport, a contract awarded to Italian consortium Aeneas in 2017 (Africa Intelligence, 13/07/17). This airport contract is uncertain (Africa Intelligence, 20/07/17). On 12 November, Turkish firm Albayrak presented a project to rebuild, run and develop Misrata's international airport.
