Abidjan governor reacts to dismissal of his fraud claim

Despite being busy, together with Abidjan Prefect Vincent Toh Bi Irié, with running the economic capital's efforts to contend with the Covid-19 pandemic, Governor Robert Beugré Mambé still managed to find time to react to the French courts throwing out of a case that the district of Abidjan launched more than a decade ago to recover over €324,000 lost to fraudsters (Africa Intelligence, 18/03/20). A close ally of president Alassane Ouattarra, who in 2017 entrusted him with organizing the Francophone Games, Mambé contacted Africa Intelligence to state that, contrary to what we had written, he did not sign the two cheques given to the beneficiaries of the sting, French national Alain Chenot and Briton Robert Etson. Mambé, who was deputy governor in charge of transport at the time of the incident, did not, he contends, have the power to sign cheques.
