New Heritage Plaque to honour Dr Norman de Bruyne

The Cambridge Branch was successful in getting approval for a bronze plaque to commemorate Dr Norman de Bruyne under the Heritage Plaque scheme.During the presentation on 8 March, Air Cdre Bill Tyack, Chairman of the Medals and Awards Committee, described the rationale of the Heritage Plaque scheme before Air Marshal Philip Sturley, Cambridge Branch President, introduced the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Mrs Julie Spence OBE QPM. She gave the following address before presenting the Plaque to Professor David Cardwell, Head of the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering:"Dr de Bruyne was an inventor and innovator whose ideas revolutionised the practical application of science to the design and manufacture of aircraft. It is fitting that this public tribute to de Bruyne's work should be displayed in the University of Cambridge, where he studied as an undergraduate and became a Fellow of Trinity College. His love of flying followed a flight in a de Havilland Moth owned by another Fellow and he became the first person taught to fly at the Marshall flying school in 1929.
