Between 1965 and 1976 a war raged in the Middle Eastern state of Oman, largely ignored at the time and since forgottenrnby history. Britain played a pivotal role in this conflict, not least in the area of airpower, with RAF pilots and aircraft helping the local forces to fight a determined Communist insurgency which, had it not been defeated, would have had disastrous strategic consequences for the West.rnThe key to ultimate victory in Oman would be a small number of BAC Strikemaster jets, flown by freelance pilots and seconded RAF airmen, the first of whichrnarrived in country 40 years ago.
