In the autumn of 1942 the Battle of the Atlantic was going badly for the Allies, with U-boat "Wolf Packs" taking a mounting toll of the convoys that brought Britain's vital food and war supplies. Such was the magnitude of the threat that the Allied navies were willing to pour resources into systems that might help in countering this menace.
