The bac tsr.2 is the one British aircraft of the twentieth century on which virtually everyone with some knowledge of military aviation will probably have an opinion. It is also yet another story dominated by politics. Despite being one of the greatest achievements of the British industry to date, the aircraft ended in a very poor second place. In many people's eyes the technology was not surpassed until the 1980s, with the Panavia Tornado's entry into service. The story begins in May 1957, when the "first" 48-point "Canberra replacement" specification, Operational Requirement (OR) 339, was drawn up, calling for an aircraft to incorporate, among other things, an advanced inertial navigation system (INS), terrain-following radar (TFR), at least supersonic speed at low level, Mach 2-plus at altitude and the ability to operate from short, unpaved airfields.
