A tribute to the 'Queen of the Skies'

In July 2012, I was very fortunate to be given exclusive access by the Royal Air Force to 101 Sqn and fly on board Vickers VC10 C.1K XV108 during its final months in service. My mission was to gain reference for a planned Operation ELLAMY painting by gaining a better understanding of this iconic aircraft, its crew and its air-to-air refuelling (AAR) role to capture these elements through my art during the type's 50th anniversary year. Having first flown from Brooklands on June 29, 1962, the initial concept by designer Sir George Edwards was to provide a jet airliner that could comfortably operate from short runways and transit long-distance routes with a high subsonic speed.
