As the 1970s dawned, Duxford airfield was a desolate place. The buildings un-restored, the grass left to grow, the famous former RAF fighter station had again taken on an air of dereliction after its 1968 resurgence for filming 'Battle of Britain'. Only motorcycle sprints, the Cambridge University Gliding Club, learner drivers and some model flying disturbed the peace. The most junior of the modellers was a schoolboy named Mark Miller, whose passion for vintage aeroplanes would not take long to develop. More than 40 years later, the wheel has turned full circle. Visit an IWM Duxford display, and Mark will probably be found flying at least one of the family-owned aircraft - Dragon Rapide, Hornet Moth and Auster Autocrat. He works there, too, being chief engineer of de Havilland Support Ltd, based on the former domestic site across the A5O5 road. Through so much of Mark's life in aviation, there is a remarkable continuity of interest.
