Avro Vulcan B2 XH558 made two valedictory 'farewell' tours of the UK on the weekend of 10-11 October, as its flying career finally wound down after eight seasons of operation by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust. It is doubtful whether there will ever again be an aviation event in Britain that will generate such enthusiasm. After taking off from its base at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster, hundreds of thousands of people lined the route for one last look at the beloved 'V-bomber' as it passed over many notable aviation sites, including Brough, RAF Leeming, Newcastle Airport, East Fortune, Carlisle, Bowness on Lake Windermere, Samlesbury, Warton, Barton, Woodford and Derby. It was the same story the following day, as, under predominantly clear skies, crowds came out in their droves to see XH558 pass over RAF Waddington, Rutland Water, North Weald, Gravesend, Herne Bay, Manston, Dover, Ashford, Dunsfold, Farnborough, Middle Wallop, Old Sarum, Bristol Airport, Filton, Cardiff Airport, St Athan, Gloucestershire Airport, RAF Brize Norton, Wellesbourne, Bruntingthorpe and Newark.
