Retire from the RAF as a high-ranking officer, and opportunities are rarely lacking. Chairmanships, directorships, consultancy posts, honorary positions and suchlike help ensure a fulfilling existence, one, more often than not, closely connected with the defence or aviation industries. Few carry on flying to any great extent, generally as a private pilot for their own enjoyment. Air Marshal Cliff Spink CBE, however, has continued where he left off. Introduced to warbirds during his RAF career, he remains one of Britain's leading exponents of powerful piston-engined historic aircraft, displaying and instructing for a variety of private operators. Notably, he has flown more different marks of Spitfire than any other current pilot.
