AEROPLANE meets REG URSCHLER

Sometimes a combination of individual and machine simply gels. The two become intrinsically linked with one another, their relationship almost symbiotic in nature, rather like that of a master craftsman with his tools. How it happens is hard, even impossible, to define, but happen it does, and the results speak for themselves. In historic aviation, Ray Hanna's relationship with Spitfire Ⅸ MH434 remains perhaps the most famous example, but there are others. Across the Atlantic, for some three decades, Brig Gen Reg Urschler and P-51D Mustang Gunfighter were just such a draw. Stalwarts of the Confederate Air Force, this great aviator and his immaculate fighter were guaranteed to put on an outstanding show. But it was not as a fighter pilot that Reg spent his illustrious US Air Force career. Rather, most of his time was in the reconnaissance community, flying clandestine missions in the Boeing RB-47 and RC-135.
