I was at home in Ledbury on holiday at the outbreak of war in September 1939. I was 18 years old, and had been working in London as a domestic servant. My parents persuaded me that London was not a safe place to go back to, so I had to find employment locally. At that time girls and women were being recruited for war work, either directly in the forces or in factories. I chose to get a job at Gloster Aircraft and went into the print department, which was attached to the experimental office and main drawing office.
