Andre Moynet was born on 19 July 1921. Already an air cadet, he became the owner of a glider pilot's licence at the age of 16. As war with Germany became inevitable, he joined the Armee de I'Air on 26 December 1939, training at Tarbes and Dax until the process was interrupted by the German invasion. After the fall of France, he decided to join the Free French in Britain. Leaving Saint-Jean-de-Luz aboard the British transport ship Ettrick on 24 June 1940, he arrived in Plymouth three days later. Despite being only 19, he made his way to London to meet Gen de Gaulle, and enlisted in the Forces Aeriennes Francaises Libres (FAFL), the Free French air arm. In the latter part of that year he was involved in the unsuccessful attempts to overthrow Vichy French forces in Senegal, not least the attack on Dakar, as well as actions in Cameroon, Gabon and Chad.
