A European supplier of polypropylene (PP) staple fibres has now developed polyolefin bicomponent fibres that combine softness and strength for nonwovens. Beaulieu Fibres International (BFI) of Wielsbeke, Belgium, makes the new fibres with a PP core and polyethylene (PE) sheath. The PE sheath offers the softness in the nonwoven, while the solid PP core is responsible for the strength and thermal stability, the company says. In addition, PE's low melting temperature (130℃) allows low bonding temperatures to be used during processing.
