The Red Queen among Organizations: How Competitiveness Evolves

With the publication of Hannan, Polos, and Carroll's (2007) book, Logics of Organization Theory, research effort in organizational ecology appears to have gravitated toward the legitimation processes that explain the emergence of identity-based organizational forms and market categories. Bill Barnett has spent the better part of two decades trying to understand competitive processes in organizational populations, the other focus of ecological theory. His recent book, The Red Queen among Organizations, summarizes a research program that has produced surprising insights about the virtues of being exposed to competition.
