Review: Mifepristone is more effective for emergency contraception than levonorgestrel

How do emergency contraception (EC) methods compare for effectiveness and side effects?nnReview scopennStudies selected compared an EC intervention with a different EC intervention, a different dose or regimen of the same drug, or placebo or no treatment in women with regular menses requesting EC after unprotected intercourse. Outcomes were pregnancy, side effects, and timing of subsequent menses. nnReview methodsnnCochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Biosis/EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, Popline, CINAHL, LILACs, Chinese biomedical databases, World Health Organization EC database, Princeton University EC website, and reference lists (to Dec 2006) were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that had < 20% loss to follow-up. Drug companies and experts were consulted. 81 RCTs (n = 45 842) met the selection criteria. 22 trials reported adequate allocation concealment, and 19 trials were double-blind.
