We propose a novel birefractive depth acquisition method, whichrnallows for single-shot depth imaging by just placing a birefringentrnmaterial in front of the lens. While most transmissive materialsrnpresent a single refractive index per wavelength, birefringent crystalsrnlike calcite posses two, resulting in a double refraction effect.rnWe develop an imaging model that leverages this phenomenon andrnthe information contained in the ordinary and the extraordinary refractedrnrays, providing an effective formulation of the geometricrnrelationship between scene depth and double refraction. To handlernthe inherent ambiguity of having two sources of information overlappedrnin a single image, we define and combine two different costrnvolume functions. We additionally present a novel calibration techniquernfor birefringence, carefully analyze and validate our model,rnand demonstrate the usefulness of our approach with several imageeditingrnapplications.
