Aside from the extenders, most of the nuances of the 2015 filing season have been known for some time. That's one reason most preparers are seeing a relatively smooth filing season thus far. In fact, early-season filing statistics show that as of January 31, the IRS had received more than 14 million tax returns, with more than 13 million of them filed electronically. That was up more than 25 percent from last year at the same time, according to the service.
