Revenue wants to raid bank accounts

Revenue & Customs is seeking powers to raid the bank accounts of people and companies who owe tax without having to get a court order first. In a consultation document published last month, the Revenue says it should be able to ask banks and building societies to freeze an amount equivalent to the outstanding debt and hand it over if all other attempts to collect the debt have 'proved fruitless'. For land and buildings, a charge could be placed on the asset so that the Revenue is paid should the asset be sold.
