KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

We want information and we want it now - on any computer screen we have to hand. But meeting our expectations isn't easy, because our personal experiences of technology have become so immediate and intuitive that our professional experiences often disappoint. Knowing how easily and affordably you can find 'an app for that' creates frustrations when getting what you want from business systems proves more difficult. There are many reasons for this, not least the legacy systems that many organisations are stuck with. They tend to be better at collecting and collating data than they are at turning it into useful information or making this easy to understand and the more software applications you have collecting data the more you can struggle to extract the information or insights you need. Fortunately, this is getting easier, as reporting and visualisation tools, such as dashboards, become more accessible (see box).
