The kind chaps at HMRC towers offered Accountancy a sneak preview of the tax department's latest YouTube video explaining plans to make life 'quicker, easier' with the Making Tax Digital regime. In the three-and-a-half minute video, the narrator explains how digital tax accounts will transform tax reporting using the example of John the plumber. As the video ended, the HMRC bod looked up smugly and said: 'If you don't mind me saying so, we think it's funky.' Well, it was, 'but you've got just one discrepancy - in the line items you've listed CIS [Construction Industry Scheme] in John's accounts but he's a plumber. He isn't in construction'. Whoops. 'Errr... we were just testing you,' came the awkward reply. When HMRC released the video all references to CIS were expunged. Glad to be of help.
