It is no stretch of the imagination to say that textiles are a form of art. There are university degrees in Fiber Arts and entire museums dedicated to past and present fashion. Tapestries and other textiles have adorned walls for hundreds of years. A group of artists in Pittsboro, N.C., USA found as much beauty in the process of creating as in the final product. The exhibition was called On Making.. Not all the art was textile related, but the site—and inspiration—was a converted textile mill. Raised gallery walkways were constructed from original mill flooring. Soapstone drying racks (soapstone was not penetrable by dye chemicals) were turned sideways and mounted to "subconsciously lead the gallery viewers in directions along an unmarked path."
