Technical textiles are designed to provide functional benefits that meet specific needs, which may vary between applications. Protection from microbial contamination in textiles can add value by providing a host of benefits for products, specifically, preservation from microbial discoloration, degradation, and odor production. Production of textiles regularly takes place far from the end consumer. In many cases, production and/ or storage facilities are not climate controlled, and unless good inventory control practices are followed, goods may be stored for long and unpredictable time spans. Shipping can also subject goods to a variable environment. Many storage and shipping conditions are ideal for growth of molds, fungi, or bacterial contaminants on textiles. In the case of inventory preservation, molds and fungal species are of greatest concern.
