Hepatitis C Treatment Outcomes in Persons With HIV and DecompensatedCirrhosis Using a Collaborative Multidisciplinary HIV-CenteredApproach

Fifty-four consecutive persons with HIV co-infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV)and liver decompensation were treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAA). TheHCV treatment was delivered using a multidisciplinary HIV-coinfection model ofcare integrating sub-specialty services in 3 countries. Of those treated, 91%(95% confidence interval, 80.1 to 95.9) achieved sustained viral response, andonly one person died during treatment. Our study provides evidence that HIVproviders achieve excellent outcomes when treating patients with histories ofdecompensated liver disease, with characteristics similar to those studied usinga multidisciplinary HIV-centered approach.
