Evaluation of the inhibitory and deactivatory effects of various pretreatment by-products on XynA activity. Inhibition of XynA by (a) lignin degradation by-products (p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, guaiacol, kraft lignin, syringic acid, vanillic acid and vanillin) at 0.5–2 mg/mL and deactivation of XynA by pre-incubation with (b) lignin degradation by-products products (p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, guaiacol, kraft lignin, syringic acid, vanillic acid and vanillin) at 2 mg/mL for 1 h. All activity reactions were conducted in 50-mM citrate buffer (pH 5.0) at 50 °C using RBBR-xylan as a substrate. Values are represented as mean values ± SD (n = 4). ANOVA analysis of inhibition or deactivation of XynA by the lignin-derived phenolics was compared to a control containing no phenolics, test key: *p value < 0.05
