Prevalence and Age Distribution of Enterobiasis in North-Eastern Bulgaria

Enterobiasis (pinworm infection) is caused by the small intestinal nematode . It has a worldwide distribution and is probably the most common helminth infection with prevalence rates reaching up to 30 – 50 % ( ; ). Children older than two years, especially those visiting childcare establishments and primary schools are the most affected group ( ; ). Adults contract enterobiasis usually from infected children by domestic or occupational exposure. Consequently, the prevalence in adults is low and thus seldom researched ( ).
