This study aimed to determine the effects of macro- (Ca, Mg) and microelements (Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, Se, Pb and Cd) in serum and seminal plasma on semen quality of Duroc boars. Basing on the utilization rate of ejaculate records from June to August 2016, a total of 166 Duroc boars were allocated into three groups: low utilization group (LG, 0 < X ≤ 60%, n =52), medium utilization group (MG, 60 < X ≤ 80%, n =50), and high utilization group (HG, 80 < X ≤ 100%, n =64). Whereafter, serum and seminal plasma samples for each boar were collected and the concentrations of elements were analyzed. Results showed LG boars had greater Cu, while lower Fe and Mn in serum than HG boars (P < 0.05). Seminal plasma Se and Cd were greater in LG boars than those in MG and HG boars (P < 0.05). Moreover, correlation analysis revealed serum Fe and Mn were negatively related to abnormal sperm rate (r = -0.172 and -0.217, respectively; P < 0.05). Serum Cu and seminal plasma Cd were also related to sperm motility (r = -0.169 and -0.153, respectively; P < 0.05) and abnormal sperm rate (r = 0.271 and 0.180, respectively; P < 0.05). Further analysis showed an increase of 4.53% abnormal sperm with the increasing of serum Cu from 1.63 mg/L to 2.44 mg/L (P < 0.05), and decrease of 2.85% motility with the increasing of seminal plasma Cd from 0 to 0.82 μg/L (P < 0.05). In conclusion, excessive Cu and absence of Fe, Mn in serum and greater level of Cd in seminal plasma may reduce the utilization rate of semen by impairing sperm motility and morphology. Producers should pay more attention to the addition and monitoring of microelements in boar diet.
