Clinical Course of Lung Physiology in Patients with Scleroderma and Interstitial Lung Disease: Analysis of the Scleroderma Lung Study Placebo Group

BackgroundPatients with scleroderma interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) are thought to have the greatest decline in lung function (forced vital capacity % predicted [FVC%]) in the early years after onset of systemic sclerosis (SSc). We assessed the natural history of FVC% decline in patients receiving placebo in the Scleroderma Lung Study and evaluated possible factors for cohort enrichment for future therapeutic trials.
