TIES THAT BIND: SOURCES OF INFORMAL AND FORMAL SUPPORT AND POSITIVE OUTCOMES IN CAREGIVERS OF PERSONS WITH DEMENTIA

Burden is common among caregivers for persons living with dementia (PWDs); however positive outcomes including caregiving gains and enhanced relationship quality with the PWD are also reported. In order to promote resilience among caregivers, it is important to understand how formal and informal supports are linked to these positive outcomes. Using the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC), we consider sources of informal and formal support as predictors of caregivers’ relationship quality with the PWD and caregiving gains. Our sample included 707 caregivers for 502 PWDs. Utilizing multiple linear regressions controlling for demographics and PWDs’ functional ability, we found that better caregiving relationship quality and greater caregiving gains were significantly associated with emotional support from friends/family. By contrast, use of support groups was associated with lower caregiving relationship quality. Caregivers with relationship challenges may seek peer support, whereas emotional support from family/friends appears particularly consequential for positive outcomes of caregiving.
