LABNET—A Microcomputer Network for Clinical Laboratories

A powerful network of microcomputers, called LABNET, is being developed for clinical laboratories. The individual microcomputers are connected by modems at a selected VHF frequency channel to a broadband cable television system. Functionality of the system is uniquely divided between various network stations to increase performance while lowering costs. One or more nodes are dedicated exclusively to database operations, using a database scheme tailored to the network environment and the particular nature of clincial data. Other nodes are used for printing and archiving functions, as well as users and on-line instruments. Special purpose nodes may be provided. The software is configured to permit considerable variance in usage, display formats, test descriptions, and other factors. The system can incorporate extensive redundancy for reliability, flexibility for growth and changing needs, and efficiency for smooth friendly operation.
