To this date the design of hospital information systems has been the province of hardware and software specialists. The theories of information and social organizations can contribute to the design of information systems by stressing the principles of formalization and the differences between routine and non-routine tasks, with their accompanying effect on worker satisfaction and organizational efficiency. In particular, the difference between the needs of research hospitals and care hospitals will be discussed.Note: This is an edited version of the longer paper prepared by Professor Fuchs-Kittowski.
