Many researchers ,such as Kaplan (1976) ,Connor (1996) and Hyland (2003) have found that L2 learners ,particularly Asian students write research papers which often seem “unclear”or“out of focus”to the native reader ,because they tend to employ a rhetoric and a mode of thinking w hich are not accepted by the Western academic community .This research explores the students’ self‐evalua‐tion and their perceived challenges and rhetoric problems in academic w riting through a questionnaire survey ,an interview and a final paper analysis .The result shows that Chinese culture influences the students ,to a great extent ,in their pattern of rhetoric and way of thinking .%很多学者发现二语和外语学习者,特别是亚洲学生的英语学术论文让西方人读起来常常感觉“主题不明确”或者“根本没有主题”,这主要因为他们的修辞手段不被西方学术同行认同。本研究通过问卷调查、访谈和期末论文分析探讨了中国学生对自身英语水平的评价、学术写作中有挑战之处以及他们论文写作中出现的修辞问题。结果表明:中国与西方的文化差异在很大程度上影响了学生的修辞手段和思维。
