%Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 is considered a brilliant anti-war novel of the absurd. Few critics have noticed the significance of an important minor character Hungry Joe, who is described as a person who often has nightmares. None of them have investigated Hungry Joe’s nightmares and the factors leading to his nightmares. This essay is an attempt to approach the novel from another perspective and to provide a psychological interpretation of Hungry Joe’s nightmares as they are described in the novel, by applying Freudian’s theory of interpretation of dreams and Ernest Hartmann’s theory of the origin and meaning of dreams and nightmares.
