Ru Yun and San Hua were best friends. They had been the best of friends for almost half their lives, at about fifteen years of age. They went to the same school,took the same bus and shared the same interests. They were always together like a pair of Siamese twins1. Nothing could separate them, not even their studies or their parents,combined ire2, and often justified, too. Perhaps, their parents would not have minded their companionship if they had something to show for it. But, the girls were both lagging in their studies, their results were poor and getting worse with time. They showed no interest or inclination3 for studies and that was the one thing that was most expected of them. Had they even made an attempt their parents would have been more kindly disposed towards them. But, term after term,year after year, they kept slipping until they dropped right to the bottom of their class. If there was any competition between them it was to see who was better, bottom up4.……
