Cellulose is the most abundant natural renewable resources. the development of a prospective, environmentally friendly, biodegradable solvent has become one of the main tasks in recent years. As the nonderivative cellulose solvent, ionic liquids have gained increasingly considerable interest in the research of cellulose. The recent developments concerning the ionic liquids as cellulose solvents are reviewed, which deal with cellulose dissolution and regeneration. The problems in the process of the dissolution are discussed and the mechanism is summarized.
