<正> Construction of the“Presidential Mansion(总统官邸)”began in 1792.Stillunfinished,and drafty(通风的)and uncomfortable,it was first occupied by JohnAdams and his family in 1800.Mrs Adams made most of her new home and hungthe wash in the East Room.The British burned the White House in the war of 1812.President James Madisonfled,but his wife Dolley Madison saved the famous Gilbert stuart portrait of Washington.
