Between Tears and Laughter is a controversial work by Lin Yutang. This paper analyzes Lin Yutang’motive in writing and translating his work through an application of the hierarchy of needs, a theory put forward by Maslow. The study mainly covers three hierarchies, i.e. love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Finally, we draw the conclusion that three main motives, i.e., to show his patriotism, to enhance his reputation in the motherland and to realize his self-value, play a primary role in Lin’s translation, which demonstrates that this work has its own positive significance.%《啼笑皆非》是林语堂一部颇有争议的作品。
