民初以来,诗歌翻译在文言和白话不同的语言形态和两种不同的知识型层面上发生,并成为中外文化交往上愈来愈重要的实践活动。新文化一派则视诗歌翻译为中国现代化的建设,鼓吹白话及新诗体的翻译,并放逐了文言及其传统格律诗体。坚持文言翻译的尝试延绵于整个20世纪,这显然具有不可忽视的文化意义。%Since early Republic of China,Chinese translation of foreign poems has been based on two different layers of knowledge and forms of language-literary or vernacular Chinese.It is an increasingly important practice in the intercommunication between Chinese and Western cultures.Regarding it as the construction of Chinese modernization,the New Culture school advocates translation in vernacular Chinese and new prosodies,and abandons literary Chinese and its traditional rhythms.However,the endeavor of poetry translation in literary Chinese throughout the whole 20th century manifests its evident cultural significance.
