中山大学社会工作教育的发展历史可以追溯至20世纪三四十年代甚至更早，却被1952年院系调整中断.1981年，中山大学在全国首批复办社会学专业.自此之后，中山大学社会工作教育的发展重新走在全国前列.特别是在20世纪的最后20年里，一系列影响中国社会工作教育的大事件足以被业界铭记：1986年，“广州会议”接纳开设社会工作课程的方案；1986~1989年，与香港大学合作全国最早的社会工作课程；1989年，举办全国首届“社会工作师资培训班”……此外，中山大学社会学系还在发展中国社会工作教育的整体设想下，不断探索自主开设大学课程和举办民政干部成人教育和培训.迈入新千年，中山大学社会工作教育更是因其所处的独特文化背景和社会环境而得到迅猛发展，取得许多令人瞩目的成就，开创“南派”社会工作的独特风格.% The history of social work education in Sun Yat-sen University can be traced back to early 1930s-1940s, but suspended by institution adjustment in 1952.
