A series of benzimidazoles containing furyl and aryl substituents at C-2 position have been synthesiszed by the reaction of 1,2,-phenylenediamine with corresponding carboxylic acids under microwave irradiation without solvent,in which artificial zeolite and catalytic amounts of DMF were used as the catalyst and the energy transfer medium, respectively. With such microwave techniques, the reaction times are remarkably shorted and the products are obtained in higher yields and cleaner reactions with easier workup than compared to conventional heating methods.
