Anovel silicon containing carbon precursor was synthesised by reacting a petroleum pitchfraction and polydimethylsilane. The precursor containing about 26wt% Si was meltspunintofibresand then oxidativelystabilised in airto renderthefibresinfusiblebefore pyrolysisat1200℃underinertatmospheretoproduceC Sialloy( CSA) fibres. Theextentofstabili sation wasfoundto becriticalto the development of mechanicalstrength of thefibres which varied with heattreatmenttemperature, showing a maximum at 1200 ℃when thestrength was 1 4 1 6 GPa. Thesestrengthsareremarkably goodconsideringthelow modulus whichis duetothe quite high failurestrains.
