The appropriate use of unidimensional and multidimensional IRT requires the knowledge of the correct number of constructs assessed by an educational measurement. Factor analysis may be used to determine the num-ber of constructs( or factors)that a set of test items really measures by providing a description of the underlying structure of the test. Several rules have been suggested by researchers about how to decide the number of factors to retain in factor analysis. It should be noted that there are a number of variables that contribute to the inaccura-cy and inconsistency of the decision rules.
