城市·成长·空间——《斯塔兹·朗尼根》的城市空间阐释

     

摘要

《斯塔兹·朗尼根》三部曲以芝加哥南区为背景,历时性地呈现了主人公斯塔兹·朗尼根从十五岁到二十九岁的成长历程。期间,斯塔兹的成长环境发生了转移:由家庭、学校和教堂转移到了街道、弹子室、廉价餐馆和公园等公共空间,其教育的承担者也由父母、修女和牧师转向了他所加入的团伙。前组空间体现了爱尔兰移民背景的影响,后组空间是现代工业城市的意象表征,它们共筑了南区病态的生活样态:偏狭、无知、隔离和精神的贫瘠。%Taking Chicago South Side as the background, Studs Lonigan: a Trilogy diachronieally presents Studs Lonigan's growing process from 15 to 29 years old. There is a change about growing surroundings in his short - lived life: from home, schools and churches to streets, poolrooms, harsh houses and parks; his education under- takers from parents, nuns, and priests to the gang he joined. The former spaces represent the influence of Irish immigrants; the latter spaces represent the images of modern industrial cities. These urban spaces reflect the fea- tures of morbid lives in Chicago South Side: insularity, ignorance, isolation and spirit poverty.
