五四运动前后，中国兴起了一场声势浩大的留法勤工俭学运动。新民学会积极发起组织会员和湖湘青年西渡赴法，为湘籍留法勤工俭学运动开展作出了重大贡献。旅法会员通过勤工俭学生涯的艰苦磨练和斗争实践，大都抛弃了工读主义等幻想，走上了信仰马克思主义和俄国十月革命的救国道路，从而奠定了学会由民主主义向共产主义转变的基础，为日后肩负起中国革命之重任提供了极为宝贵的人才资源。%Before and after the May 4th movement, China had a massive Hardworking - frugal wave to France.
