A great historical document, The Speech at the Yah' an Forum on Literature and Art embodies Mao Zedong' s understanding and requirement of two issues in literature and art as a statesman at the height of national liberation. The document, having absorbed and reflected the opinion of many writers as well as having exerted a tremendous influence on contemporary and modern Chinese literature, is a key entry point for understanding contemporary and modern Chinese literature. The seventy years after the publication of the address can be divided into two phases: the initial 40 years is "the age under the direct impact of the speech" in literature ; while the later thirty years is a post-speech one in literature. The presence or absence of The Speech at the Yan' an Forum on Literature and Art has a marked influence on the creation of writers and the development of literature, thus having caused diverse results.
