The definition, characteristic and research content of Grid GIS and Cloud GIS were elaborated. Then the differences and similarities between Grid GIS and Cloud GIS were discussed from the perspective of user types, ap-plication methods, resource sources, key technologies, business models and information security. The development of Grid GIS and Cloud GIS were also discussed.
