The novel mainly displays Marguerite Duras' s death concept and it is the prelude of her novels to express the theme of love and death. The hero in the novel comprehends nothingness and disillusion of life when watching the death of others and realizes the value and significance of the life when experiencing death. Marguerite Duras retells Martin Heidegger' s philosophical thinking "das Sein zum Tode" in her novel.
