This article is a summary of the keynote speech written by Dr. Chris Owers for the recent Intertech 2000 Conference in Vancouver. It makes a case for an effort to be made towards a better understanding of the economics of di-amond in industry through the knowledge and experi-ence of people within the industry and the education of oth-ers outside it and looks at the future, both of traditional industrial diamond as a superabrasive and of 'New Dia-mond', which will find applications in areas which benefit from diamond's unique combination of optical, thermal and chemical properties as well as its more well known mechani-cal ones. It is a fitting tribute to a man who spent over 30years working in industrial diamonds and reflects the expori-ence, knowledge and vision for which he was well known.
