Computer-Assisted Language Learning: the State of the Art with Special Reference to the Chinese Context

摘要

This paper attempts to present a critical review of the state of the art in computer-assisted language learning(CALL) with special reference to the Chinese context. It first cites Levy's review of CALL as a global context in which the Chinese CALL is situated. CALL in China has literally no pre-network CALL. The turn of the millennium witnessed cyber rush in China with 68 Web-based CALL faculties established within a ve-ry short space of time. The focus of this paper is to critically review this cyber rush with regard to the courseware design, evaluation, conceptualization, and policy dimension. The paper concludes with suggestive strategies for coping with constantly changing telematic technologies.
