A new theoretical method has been developed for the calculation of dispersion relationsand field distribution functions of optical waveguides by applying the steepest descent approx-imation theory. This new method avoids the infinite summation over the reference mode inthe perturbation theory, improves the form of trial function for field distribution directlyinstead of the parameter optimization in an ordinary variational one, and approximates theexact value of propagation constant and field distribution via iteration.
